The article "Philadelphia superintendent identifies schools he intends to close" by Kristen A. Graham is about the Philadelphia school district’s superintendent  William R. Hite Jr. plans to close down 37 schools in the city of Philadelphia and some of the reasons behind his plan. William Hite is planning on closing 22 elementary, 4middle, and 11 high; some he will combine with other schools and others the student will just be moved to a different school. By closing these schools Hite believes it will save money which the school district is in desperate need of and also to increase academic performance of low performing students. Some schools that are being shut down have been said to have underutilized space accommodating less students than they, Hite is planning on shutting down the school and moving the students to another school that will save the school district from paying the bills of that underutilized building and saving money. Hite’s plan to close school will raise the utilization from 67 percent to 80 percent. Another reason why Hite is planning on closing schools is because some schools fail to meet academic requirements. Moving kids to different school, Hite hopes will help some kids to improve their academic level.  Even though there is good in closing these schools there are others who believe it’s a bad idea. Jerry Jordan, president of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers stated, “…who know the community and the many potential problems that are inherent in making these kinds of school closings.” The closing of schools can be good as in helping the school district save money but bad if moving children cause them to be academically.
